Fire on Fire’sMushing Training and Work Programis a first-of-its-kind initiative in Europe: a serious, demanding, and supportive training environment designed to allow dogs to showcase their Nordic abilities and carry on the sled-dog tradition. It offers breeders a unique opportunity to showcase their bloodlines through working titles, which are essential to striking a balance between beauty and function. Our mushing program allows passionate owners and breeders to entrust their dogs to us for a full season of training and racing in Lapland, with a clear goal: to provide them with an authentic sled dog experience and enable them to earn an official working certificate that grants access to the working class at dog shows.
The training program follows the natural rhythm of the seasons in Lapland and prioritizes the dog's well-being.
- September–October: Getting Started
The dogs begin training with the ATV or scooter, covering short distances. Temperatures are closely monitored: no outings when it’s above 10°C. The dogs still spend part of their time indoors during the transition period, while beginning to get used to the outdoor kennel to build up their fur and adapt to the cold. - November–December: Progress
Distances gradually increase: 10, 20, then up to 30 km on land, reaching 60 km in early December on snow. The dog learns to pace itself, run as part of a team, and find its place in the team. - January–April: peak season
This is the season for official races. The dogs compete in several medium-distance races (50 to 60 km), which allow them to meet the criteria for earning their certification. Training is tailored accordingly, alternating between long runs, speed work, active recovery, and complete rest. - May–August: Recovery
The season ends with a period of rest and transition. The dogs return to their families having gained a unique experience and, for those who have passed the test, a working certificate that recognizes their achievements.
The dogs in my care live just like my own, integrated into the pack and treated with respect for their needs:
- Indoor rearing at the start of the season (September–October), for the transition period and close monitoring.
- The dogs live outdoors in kennels as soon as temperatures drop, in order to acclimate to the cold and develop the coat they need to withstand the winter. The facilities comply with Norwegian standards (at least 12 m² per dog, kennels housing a maximum of 4 dogs, insulated doghouses, a rotation system for dogs that sleep inside the house, etc.).
- Physical and mental exercise outside of driving, for mental and emotional balance.
- Health care: osteopathy, physical therapy, and massage; veterinary care if necessary.
Each dog is monitored individually, with special attention paid to its morale, motivation, and physical condition.
Dogs are entered in official races in Norway (e.g., Beaskadas, Tromsquest, Aurora Trail, Pasvik Trail). We handle these entries, the races—which can sometimes cover several hundred kilometers—and all the logistics (transportation, lodging, equipment), and these are included in the program.
